Your Questions and Comments:
- "I'm sure that I have read 1 Peter 4:8 before, However, I'm not sure that I fully understand the content of the verse. It reads: 8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Does this mean that sin is forgiven, or helps to offset the sin that we do? Please explain." - It's an interesting phrase. I think it could have at least a couple meanings. First, I think it means that when we are a Christian fellowship filled with people who are loving each other deeply, we will be merciful and forgiving toward each other when we are sinned against. We presume the best when someone speaks a harsh word to us and don't take it personally. We eagerly extend forgiveness when a brother or sister asks. Our love for each other makes it easy to forgive and so "cover" the sins of others. Second, I think it also points us toward Christ and the cross and the reality that loving someone means wanting what is best for them. Rather than eagerly pursuing judgment and condemnation, we want to see them forgiven. Love wants to "cover" (i.e. forgive) sin, not rush to judgment.
