* * * * *

It's Day 1 and we're in Acts 5.

Where God Spoke To Me:
- Verse 17 - You'd like to think we work from higher motives, but even in the things of God it often comes down to things as petty as jealousy.

Help:
- Verse 5 - This is shocking.  I think it speaks to the purity of the early church and how much God wanted to maintain that.

Your Thoughts:
- "H.L. Ellison says in his commentary published as part of the Daily Bible Study Series that, 'The force of 'the third and fourth generation' has been very widely missed. In early Israelite society the sons, when they married, settled in the immediate vicinity of the parental home. Given the usual age of marrieage, the aged head of the family would normally have four generations living in close proximity and being influenced by him. This would be bound to be harmful if he had an inadequate concept of God as shown by his use of images...This rendering represents the old rabbanic tradition and is almost certainly correct.'
Going back to Exodus 20:6, God's promise is, '...showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.'
So it seems that in today's language this passage would more closely mean that the entire immediate family shall suffer for the sins of a family member. The truth of this is easy to see in terms of families beset with alcohol and drug abuse, but it is no less so for sins of the 'little' things."
